“Give your body what it needs and it will give you what you need.”
I wrote this in my book, The Optimal Health Cookbook: Your Guide to Real Food Made Easy and stand by it.
Losing weight and feeling good isn’t about finding the right fad diet or latest scientific “trick,” it’s about eating the foods that nourish you and not the ones that inflame you. It’s that simple. “How do I know which foods nourish me and which Foods cause inflammation or other negative effects?” By gaining awareness through an elimination diet like the one laid out in The Optimal Health Cookbook: Your Guide to Real Food Made Easy. Margaret’s story below is the latest success story of how are you can get your life back by simply changing your diet. No doctors, pills, scales, or expensive gadgets needed. Just a little time and the desire to feel better.
Margaret had COVID-19 in early 2020. It was a rough case and she hadn’t felt quite right ever since. Her muscles were weakening, she was tired all the time and she was repeating herself, forgetting a conversation she had moments ago. She and her husband Steve suspected “long COVID” and they sought the help of doctors. Test after test revealed nothing. Doctors pumped her with pharmaceuticals and vitamins with no relief and in some cases making her sicker. Steve said the memory loss was beginning to resemble dementia and he was getting very worried. The frustration and lack of results from doctors led them to take matters into their own hands. Steve heard me, and others, talking about the effect that changing your diet can have on your health and decided to eliminate gluten, dairy, and sugar from their diet. Margaret began to feel better within days. Within a few weeks her memory was back she was smiling, feeling good, and able to do everything she did before getting sick. She even lost some weight she’s been trying to lose. “I have my wife back,” Steve told us.
Stories like Margaret’s are becoming more and more common as people begin to take their health into their own hands and adjust what they’re feeding their bodies. A June 2021 Wall street journal article Precision nutrition is on the rise states, “if you feed your body what it wants, it will take care of all those calories, and you don’t have to worry about them.” Sound familiar?
It’s nice to see the idea of personalized eating catching on. With “precision nutrition” the idea is to have tests to look at your microbiome and hire practitioners to then help you decide what to eat. This approach is likely much more helpful than jumping on the bandwagon of a fad diet claiming to be good for everyone. However, there’s one piece missing and it may be the most important piece- awareness of your body’s signals. If you base your diet on test results only without paying attention to how you feel and react to foods, you may miss the mark. And what happens when your body has different needs a year or two later? Responding to the changing needs of your physiology is ongoing and easy when you know your body’s signals. Your body doesn’t lie. When you embark on an elimination diet like the one laid out in my book, you’ll know how to read your body’s signals and know what to eat for the rest of your life.
If you want lasting results simply, inexpensively, and with you in charge, an elimination diet is all you need.
