Happy Halloween! For many of us, especially those with young children and/or a young-at-heart spirit, this is one of the most festive and celebrated times of year. Like most traditional holidays, partying and sweets abound. At face value, these serve to “have a good time” and indulge in a treat (or 5). Going deeper, they honor and invite wisdom of the spirits who’ve crossed over, including our elevated ancestors.

Thousands of years ago, Samhain was celebrated in the Celtic tradition October 31 – November 1. It was (and still is) believed that during this time, the veil between the world of the living and the world of the dead was at its thinnest. During this time, communication with the spirit world is easier and the presence of loved ones who’ve passed can be felt more easily. Many still believe this and celebrate the “Day of the Dead” November 1st to honor those who’ve passed on. And what is Halloween but the eve to “call in” the well ancestors and spirits who have wisdom and support to share.

Whether you believe in communicating with the spirit world and those who’ve passed or not, you may notice a heightened sense of awareness and intuition during this time, if you’re paying attention. You may have particularly interesting dreams and be more apt to remember your dreams. You may feel more introspective and thoughtful.  You may notice things you hadn’t before. You may find yourself thinking of loved ones who’ve passed. What visual, conversation, or memory popped up? Is it significant to you? Is it helpful?

What can you do to help feel the presence of loved ones and receive the wisdom of the spirits?

Pay attention. Allow it to happen. That’s really all you have to do. Meditation, shamanic journeying, qigong, and walking in nature are my favorite ways to connect with the spirit world. Some people set up an alter to honor spirits and ancestors who’ve passed. The alter may contain photos, crystals, candles, sweets, flowers, bells, … anything that symbolizes, honors, or sparks connection. Meditate or simply sit quietly in front of your alter, hold a soft gaze that neither focuses on one thing nor shuts out your environment. If that’s not your style, go for a walk, join a qigong class, or work with someone who can help you connect to nature and the spirit world.
